Archives Committee

The embryo of ACES originated with the late Dr. Malinda L. Hayes in February 2011. Gathering at the home of the late Pat Bynum, she along with Mary Flowers, Debora Land, and the late Joy Terrell, envisioned an organization dedicated to representing African American history and culture in SCP events. The first meeting of "The Black History Planning Committee" was held at Club Peachtree with the purpose being to plan activities to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr's birthday. The planning committee included Vera McIntosh, Mildred Slayton, Deborah Land, Melinda Hayes, Sojoner Warren, Lillian Ayers, Mary Flowers, Gail Edwards, Pat Bynum, and Bernadette Murphy. Successful events from that planning included "A Soulful Taste of History" where they partnered with community restaurants and local chefs to implement a fund raiser held in six of the model homes presenting foods from Africa, African American, Caribbean, Creole, and Southern heritages; and a celebration of Jazz at the golf club led by Don McIntosh.

The first e-blast was made in 2011 and invited SCP residents to attend a meeting at Club Peachtree to plan activities around Martin Luther King's birthday. The Lifestyle Committee, led by residents Diana Berg and Stacy Gooding, then formed a "Black History Planning Committee" which met to plan activities for Black History Month. Early activities included a case study on the history of the Black press conducted by Daniel Murphy, great-grandson of John H. Murphy who first published the Afro-American Newspaper in 1892; a lecture and performance about Sojourner Truth created and performed by Celena Bostic Perry; a history of the song "Amazing Grace" provided by Tom Newton, a distant nephew of the author John Newton; and a doll house exhibit which showcased items invented by African Americans.

In 2014, the Black History Planning Committee transitioned into the ACES Interest Group.

The mission of the ACES Archives Committee is to collect, organize, document, and store historical and ongoing significant information. The committee was established in 2021 and they actively search for and preserve ACES material of historic value. It is a resource for members and potential members to review the origin, mission, programs, accomplishments, and benefits of ACES. If you are interested in helping with this vital activity, please contact Bernadette Murphy or Clarece Jones.
